WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A DOG FOOD

What to look for in dog foods
What foods should not contain
  • A whole-meat source as at least one of the first two ingredients. Meat is the most important source of protein for dogs. Meat should always be at least one of the top two ingredients in food, with the exception of foods made for dogs with certain allergies to an all diets.
  • Good Sources of protein. Either whole, fresh meats or single source meat meal (such as Chicken Meal rather then Poultry meal)
  • Unprocessed grains, vegetables, and other foods. Unprocessed foods have a greater chance of retaining it nutrients and enzymes.
  • Meat byproducts. These are considered "Second Class" meat. They are not human grade quality. It is meat taken from the "4D's" or "Downers" cattle. (Animals that are dead, dying, diseased, or disabled prior to reaching the slaughterhouse are known as "downers" or "4D" animals).
  • Artificial preservative (BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin)
  • Artificial Colors
  • Sweeteners such as corn syrup or sucrose. These are used to attract dogs to unappealing food.
  • Propylene glycol Added to chewy foods to keep them moist. Toxic when consumed in large amounts.
